Growth Report 1: Struthers Completes New Strategic Plan

STRUTHERS – With the completion last year of its comprehensive plan, the city of Struthers made strides in its strategic planning for economic development.
The plan, titled Discover Struthers, outlines a multipronged approach to stimulate economic development while improving the quality of life for its residents. It was completed in October. This vision for the future includes multimodal transportation downtown, riverfront development, utility improvements and accessible transportation.
In June, Struthers was awarded $1 million from the state for a project that will enhance safety on Bridge Street, downtown, by narrowing traffic lanes, improving crosswalk markings to increase visibility, and adding bike lanes.
Struthers was also awarded a second $1 million grant from the state transportation department to replace the Wetmore Bridge in Yellow Creek Park. Construction will begin in the spring.
In July, Struthers opened its new fire station. The city received a $123,000 FEMA grant to purchase much needed safety equipment for the fire department. Using ARPA money, the city was also able to purchase a 2022 Sutphen fire truck, replacing its 1997 model.
Additionally, Struthers was able to provide small-business façade grants to six businesses.
For the third year in a row, The Arbor Day Foundation recognized Struthers as a Tree City USA. The program provides a framework to maintain and grow the tree cover and celebrate the mission of environmental change.
The city spent two days with the American in Bloom program, which recognizes community enhancement programs. This was made possible by a grant from the Ohio Association of Realtors.
