Growth Report 2: DeSalvo Construction Completes Projects at Schools, Stambaugh

HUBBARD – DeSalvo Construction Co. worked on more than a dozen high-profile projects in 2022, including renovations to Stambaugh Auditorium and construction at educational and health care buildings.

The Stambaugh project included restoration of the building’s façade, removal and reconstruction of the monumental staircase, the addition of handicapped-access ramps, new walkways and exterior lighting systems.

Joseph K. DeSalvo, president of the Hubbard-based industrial-commercial contractor, says while all of the projects are exciting, the ones that will be used by the children of the Mahoning Valley “are extra special.” These projects include Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley and school wellness centers in Warren and Campbell.

Other projects in 2022 include:

• Youngstown Orthopaedic: New medical office building (Poland).
• Heritage Manor: Patient room renovations (Youngstown).
• Canfield United Methodist Church: Preschool restrooms.
• Eye Care Associates: Exam room, lobby updates (Poland).
• Shepherd of the Valley: Condo updates (Poland and Howland).
• 717 Credit Union: Lobby updates (Austintown).
• Aim Transportation Solutions: Office renovations (Liberty Township).

Construction volume exceeded the company’s expectations for the year, negating client concerns over longer schedules and increased costs. DeSalvo says his company delivered its projects on time and within budget.

Projects in 2023 include:

• Akron Children’s Hospital: Primary care build out (Campbell).
• Millennial Moments: Primary care medical office for Salem Regional Medical Center (Canfield).
• Eastwood Shops Center: New commercial retail building (Niles).
• Farmers National Bank: Headquarters addition and renovations (Canfield).

Inspired by care provided to a child of the company’s president, DeSalvo Construction named Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley as a beneficiary of its Giving Tuesday fundraising challenge.

For each donation received by the hospital from DeSalvo employees and its partners, the company matched it, up to a total of $25,000. That amount was quickly reached.

Lenny Fisher, chairman Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, then donated $25,000, inspiring the DeSalvo family to commit to an additional $25,000 match. In total, the construction company’s Giving Tuesday effort raised $164,000 for Akron Children’s.
