Handel’s Reopens with Advance Ordering, Limited Hours
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — After nearly a month of being closed because of the coronavirus pandemic, Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream is reopening some of its locations for advance ordering only.
In a statement on the company website, CEO Rich Matherne said all locations are adhering to new operating procedures based on guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including handwashing, disinfecting and cleaning procedures. To limit person-to-person contact, stores are operating with limited hours, limited flavors and items, and advanced ordering and payment.
“While all Handel’s locations will adhere to all safety and operational procedures, individual franchisees will make the decision when to open their locations, based on state and local guidelines and individual circumstances,” Matherne said in the statement. “We appreciate your patience and understanding that these temporary changes are just that, and we will get back to providing the complete Handel’s menu and experience you enjoy in every location, as soon as we are able.”
As of April 21, stores open in the Mahoning Valley include locations in Austintown, Creekside and South Avenue stores in Boardman, Liberty, Niles and Poland. Stores in Columbiana and on the southside of Youngstown are closed, according to the list on the website.
Stores are open from noon to 9 p.m. and are offering only pints, dishes and ice cream sandwiches. Customers can visit HandelsIceCream.com/locations to find their nearest store to see what flavors are available and place an order.
