Healthy Community Store Initiative Expands in Girard

GIRARD, Ohio — Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership announced Friday that Save A Step Community Store in Girard is now offering fresh produce.

“This effort is a great success in mitigating the impacts of food insecurity throughout Trumbull County,” said TNP Healthy Food Access Coordinator Christian Bennett-Mosley. “It not only supports healthy eating but solidifies healthier food distribution networks and relationships.”

The community organization addresses food access insecurities through the Healthy Community Store Initiative to help store owners connect with fresh produce distributors. This effort has served to expand relationships between these owners and food distribution companies. As a participant of the initiative, Save A Step was able to expand its fresh produce offerings by receiving refrigeration as an incentive through the program.

Fresh produce is available at Save A Step Community Store in Girard.

Save A Step is located at 230 N. State St, Girard, OH 44420. It’s part of Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership’s goal to continue to open long-term distribution opportunities for convenience stores within the Mahoning Valley that want to sell healthy foods within their communities.

Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership released the Warren Community Food Security Strategic Plan in 2017, which identified impediments to healthy food access and emphasized the need to take a multi-faceted approach to working within the food system including supporting urban agriculture, farmers markets, and partnering with existing retail nodes like corner stores to increase fresh food offerings.
