Financial Planning 101

How Much Should I Invest in Stocks?

With so many investment opportunities out there, a question commonly asked is how much of one’s portfolio should be allocated to stocks? Given how much of the volatility stocks can drive in one’s portfolio, the answer to that question is rarely cut and dry.

When determining how much you should invest in stocks, there are a few rules of thumb to keep in mind. First, determine the type of stock you want to invest in. Growth stocks, value stocks, domestic stocks, international stocks, emerging markets are some of the stock types you can choose. All of these stocks come with differing levels of risk. You’ll also want to determine how much stock you want to own, be it in one company or several.

Before you can make a decision on these and other variables, you need to determine your goals for the money that you’re investing. In this installment of Financial Planning 101, Jonathan Lapine digs deeper into what these variables are all about and offers some insight into why investing based on your goals matters.
