How Spruce Home Decor Works on Its Business, Not in It | Gloves Off

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — What does it mean to work ON your business, not IN your business?

In this segment of the Gloves Off Ownership Series, Angela Johnson of White Glove Payroll chats with Erica Lewis and Nick Giancola, owners of Spruce Home Decor.

“This is definitely something we’ve had to learn and grow into as a small business owner,” Giancola says. “You start with a vision and you want to do everything. But as time goes on, you realize if you want to grow, you really need to step away from some of the things you use to be doing.”

Part of that is diving into and clearly defining their individual roles with the company. While Giancola hands a lot of the creative aspects and buying, Lewis likes to get hands on, training the employees and dealing with shipping at the back end.

“So that’s kind of working actually on the business, not necessarily in it, because we are in the background,” she says. “I feel like being in it, I am working on it. I’m taking my knowledge that I’ve learned and I’m passing it on to my employees, so at one point I can step away.”
