Husband and Wife Team Open Juny Café in Austintown

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – With a welcoming décor and French flair, Juny Café has opened at 5865 Mahoning Ave.

Located in a small building near the entrance to Walmart, the coffee shop is owned by the husband and wife team of Mickael and Danielle Sopel.

Mickael, who is a native of France, is the coach of the Youngstown State University tennis team, and Danielle owns Birdie 33, an interior design company.

Mickael came to the United States in 2007 to study at Lewis and Clark College in Idaho, where he also played on the tennis team. He then became the assistant tennis coach at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, for a few years before taking the position at YSU. He has a master’s degree in business administration and will handle the business end of Juny Café.

Mickael managed a tennis academy in his native France, where his duties extended to the pro shop and restaurant.

The interior of Juny Café features a wall mural.

Danielle, who is a native of Wooster, worked as a barista when she was a student at Ohio State University in Columbus. She combines her experience as a barista and as a designer in Juny Café, giving the shop a look that is casually elegant. One corner of the seating area features a black and white wall mural depicting scenes of Paris, created by YSU student Grace Mazur.

Juny Café is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday (closed Monday).

In addition to tea and fresh-brewed coffee, it offers flavored latte, mocha, cappuccino, macchiato, espresso and French variations on espresso such as Café Noisette – a full bodied drink with heavy cream.

The shop uses coffee beans from Branch Street Roasters of Boardman and Sure House Coffee of Wooster.

It will soon add a window for drive-thru service, as well as online ordering.

Juny Café, which is named for the Sopels’ dog, also sells pastries, ice cream and shakes, and will add a light lunch menu of wraps and flatbreads.

The shop has a small retail section that sells locally made beauty and décor items, prepackaged coffee and tea and works by local artists and photographers.
