Job Postings Tick down in Ohio, Though More Openings for Nurses

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The northeastern Ohio area saw 104,947 jobs posted online from Nov. 14, 2021, through Dec. 13, which is down 2,971 ads from the previous reporting period.

That’s still 25,509 more ads than were posted to OhioMeansJobs.com for the same period a year ago, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The 18-county area, which includes Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, has seen an overall rise in online job postings since early 2020.

A total of 312,158 job openings were posted online for the state, which is down 8,787 from the previous reporting period. Compared to the same time period a year ago, this reflects an increase of 70,674 ads.

Registered nurses continue to lead top occupations with the most area job ads. Statewide, OhioMeansJobs.com had 21,232 postings in December, which is up from 20,684 for the reporting period ended Nov. 13.

In northeastern Ohio, job postings for registered nurses increased to 7,645 from Nov. 14 to Dec. 13, up from 7,469 in the prior reporting period. A Jan. 28 search at OhioMeansJobs. for registered nurse positions within a 20-mile radius of Youngstown found 329 results.

Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers had the second most job ads with 13,235, with first-line supervisors of retail sales workers (12,859), retail salespersons (9,699) and software developers, applications (7,675) rounding out the top five.

Of the total posted jobs, 26% list a middle income salary range of $30,000 to $49,000. Upper middle income jobs ($50,000 to $79,000) comprise 27.3% of posted jobs. Entry level jobs (less than $30,000) make up 15.3% of postings, high-income jobs ($80,000 to $99,000) 11% and six-figure jobs 20.4%.

Most jobs posted (41.5%) require a high school diploma or GED, compared to 39.3% that require a bachelor’s degree, 13.7% require an associate degree, 2.7% a master’s degree and 2.8% a doctoral degree.
