Junior Achievement Focuses on Financial Literacy, Entrepreneurship in 2022

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley is inviting participants for its lineup of financial literacy and entrepreneurship programs this year.

Programs include JA High School Financial Literacy, JA Titan Virtual Challenge and JA Start My Business.

JA Financial Literacy is a one-semester, educator-led, evidence-based course that teaches high school students foundational personal finance skills, according to a release. Four course units include Employment and Income; Money Management; Credit, Debt and Keeping Your Finances Safe; and Planning for the Future.

In this course, students learn to identify income sources, self-analyze finances, set financial goals and build a financial plan. They also learn how to interpret a paycheck, create a budget, plan for the future by saving and investing, protect their credit and manage debt, evaluate and mitigate risk, and plan for taxes.

The program aligns with Ohio Financial Literacy Content standards and Common Core standards. Teachers interested in the program can get additional information at MahoningValley.ja.org or by emailing [email protected].

The JA Titan virtual challenge is a simulation-based program that teaches high school students financial literacy, work and career readiness, and entrepreneurship fundamentals. Students compete as business CEOs and experience how an organization evaluates alternatives, makes decisions, analyzes outcomes and strategizes next steps, according to the release.

During the program, students run a manufacturing company while making key business decisions in production, marketing, research and development, and corporate social responsibility.

Students can win scholarships and other prizes. Top contestants are eligible for the National JA Titan competition.

In February, Junior Achievement is launching its Start My Business workshops, which encourage creativity and confidence among students. During in-person workshops, students are guided through the business startup process and will develop practical entrepreneurial skills, such as organization, money management, problem solving and communication, according to the release.

Workshops will be held at the Eastwood Mall Complex and are scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. on Feb. 17, and from 2 to 4 p.m. on Feb. 21. Participants receive the JA Start My Business Workbook, which covers topics like market research, budgeting, advertising and creating a business plan.

Students who complete the program can participate in a Youth Market Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 30 at the Eastwood Mall.
