LED Installation Will Brighten Up Dave Grohl Alley

WARREN, Ohio – A custom-made LED lighting installation will be put up on the ceiling of the tunnel in Dave Grohl Alley this summer.

Brite Energy Innovators has already raised $10,000 for the $20,000 project, says Daniel Sylak, marketing specialist for the incubator. Work will get underway soon and should be complete before September.

“With the funding we have already received, we can start on it,” Sylak says. “If we don’t get all of the remainder, we will just reduce the functionality of it.”

Metal tracking will be installed on the ceiling of the covered portion of the alley in front of the entrance to Modern Methods Brewing. More than 25,000 LED lights will be mounted.

Brite owns the space that Modern Methods operates in, Sylak says. If the project meets its funding goals, it will install a kiosk in the brewpub for people to upload songs of their choosing. The lighting installation will be able to respond to the music’s rhythm in a display that complements the song, according to Sylak.

The installation is being designed and will be installed by Chromaticity Technologies of Howland. It will be the first display of this type in the Mahoning Valley.

In any event, the installation will be on every evening and speakers will be mounted to play an automated queue of predetermined songs.

The fundraising campaign is in partnership with the Dave Grohl Alley Committee.

“We’ve wanted to pair our mission with the authenticity of the alley for quite some time,” says Sara Daugherty, Brite’s director of operations, who noted the installation will make the alleyway a safer space for pedestrians. “Tying technology to being able to experience Dave Grohl’s music in a new way is very exciting.”

Since its dedication in 2009, the committee has preserved the downtown Warren thoroughfare as an arts, tourism and entertainment destination.

“This new partnership with Brite will keep the momentum going with the redevelopment of downtown Warren,” says Shawn Carvin, chairman of committee.

To donate to the project, go to the Dave Grohl Alley page at GoFundMe.com, or send a check payable to Brite Energy Innovators to 125 W. Market St., Warren, OH 44481.

Dave Grohl Alley honors the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer who was born in Warren and spent part of his childhood in the city. It features artwork, a metal sculpture of Grohl playing drums, and a sculpture dubbed “The World’s Largest Drum Sticks.”
