Dr. John Luellen, president of Mercy Health-Youngstown, gives a brief insight into the types of patients and cases an emergency room physician will usually encounter.

He says that severe cases only make up a small percentage of patient visits, and many only need symptom management.

“I think what’s most challenging to the patient is understanding where in that spectrum they can get the best care,” he says.
