Valley Auto Sales Decline 2.6% in May

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Auto sales in the Mahoning Valley fell again last month as 5,004 new and used vehicles were sold in May, down 2.6% from a year prior, according to the latest data from the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association.

Last month marked the fifth consecutive that monthly combined new and used car sales were down from 2017.

Sales of new cars in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties totaled 2,845 in May, down 1.6% from last year.

Leading sales locally was Sweeney Chevrolet, Boardman, with 202 sold, followed by Greenwood Chevrolet, Austintown, 186; Boardman Subaru, Boardman, 127; Sweeney Buick GMC, Boardman, 126; and Stadium GM, Salem, 125.

All five dealerships – and eight of the top 10 dealers – posted declines from a year ago.

Used-car sales fell 3.8% to 2,099 in the three-county area, the dealers association reported. Greenwood Chevy led local sales in the category with 130 leaving its lot. It was the only dealership to hit triple digit sales for used vehicles.

Across the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association’s 22-county region, combined new and used car sales were up 1.8% to 7,235. Greenwood and Sweeney Chevrolet were the only local dealerships in the top five, ranking third and fourth on the sales chart, respectively.
