Local Auto Sales Rise 2.1% in August

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Auto sales in the Mahoning Valley were up slightly in August as 5,510 new and used cars were sold, according to data from the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association, a 2.1% increase from the same month a year ago.

The gain was fueled by the sale of new cars in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties as 3,157 new vehicles were sold, up 4.5%. Used-car sales totaled 2,300, up nine units from August 2018.

“We’re very pleased to see stable, solid growth,” said Louis A. Vitantonio, president of the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association, ina statement. “In a market that we predicted would be flat or off by one or two percent, dealers across northern Ohio continue to outperform our expectations. We expect the market to remain steady through the end of the year as underlying market dynamics remain strong.”

Leading new-car sales in the area was Sweeney Chevrolet, Boardman, with 184 cars delivered to customers in August, five more than last year. Following were Greenwood Chevrolet, Austintown, with 169, down 10 from last year; Boardman Subaru, Boardman, with 156, down 30; Stadium GM, Salem, with 150, down 22; and Toyota of Boardman with 138, up 40 from last year.

Topping the used-car sales chart was Greenwood Chevrolet with 117 sold, three more than a year ago.

Across the dealership association’s 22-county membership area, three dealerships ranked in the top 10 for combined new- and used-car sales: Greenwood Chevy at No. 8 with 296, Sweeney Chevy at No. 9 with 276 and Boardman Subaru at No. 10 with 241.
