Local Schools Named to Purple Star Class of 2023

COLUMBUS, Ohio – New Purple Star designations for four local schools were announced by the Ohio Department of Education on Tuesday.

Showing a dedication to support students in military families, Purple Star schools are awarded in April, which is part of Ohio’s participation in the national celebration of Month of the Military Child.

As part of the process of gaining the recognition, schools choose a school-based staff person to serve as a liaison between military families and the school. That person completes professional development, identifies military-connected students and facilitates support, and the school participates in at least one activity to support the military community each year.

Canfield Local’s high school and middle school, as well as the elementary and high schools at Leetonia Exempted Village Schools, were named to the list of 88 new schools receiving the award.

B.L. Miller Elementary School in Sebring and Southington Elementary in Southington were two of 77 schools across the state renewed for another three years on the list.
