Valley Auto Sales Down in August, Year-to-Date

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – New and used car sales in the Mahoning Valley continued to fall last month as dealerships sold 5,063 vehicles in August, down 1.1% from the same month a year ago, data from the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association show. It marks the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year sales declines in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.

Last month, 2,806 new cars, trucks and SUVs were sold in the tri-county area, a 5.2% drop from a year ago.

Chevrolet once again held the top four spots on the Valley’s sales charts for new models, led by the Silverado, with 202 delivered in August. Rounding out the top five were the Lordstown-built Cruze, 174; the Equinox, 141; the Malibu, 119; and the Ford F-150, 99. The Cruze and Malibu were the only models in the top five to post a year-over-year increase in sales with gains of 12 and 2, respectively.

Greenwood Chevrolet, Austintown, kept its spot as the top-selling dealership in the Mahoning Valley, as 233 vehicles were sold, followed by Sweeney Chevrolet, Boardman, with 177. Stadium GM Superstore ranked third with 149 cars leaving its showroom, trailed by Toyota of Boardman and Columbiana Chevrolet Buick Cadillac with 118 and 112, respectively. All dealerships in the top five for new car sales posted sales gains over last year.

Taylor Kia, Boardman, led sales for used vehicles, selling 114 last month, 27 more than August 2015. The top selling used model in the Mahoning Valley was the Cruze with 102 sold, a gain of 14 from a year ago.
