Mahoning Valley Unemployment Rises in August

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Area unemployment rates were up month over month in August but were down from a year earlier, the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services reported Tuesday morning.

Trumbull County posted a 4.5% unemployment rate last month, up from 4.2% in July but down from 5.1% in August 2022. Mahoning County’s unemployment rate was slightly lower than Trumbull’s, at 4.4%, up from 4.0% the month before and down from 5.0% a year earlier.

Columbiana County reported a 4.3% unemployment rate, up from 4.0% in July and down from 5.0% in August 2022.

The Mahoning Valley’s two largest cities posted the highest unemployment rates last month among Ohio cities reported by ODJFS. Youngstown’s August unemployment rate was 5.8%, up from 5.3% in July but down from 6.7% in August 2022. Warren’s unemployment rate last month was 5.6%. also up from 5.3% the month before and down from 6.6% a year ago.

The unemployment rate for the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area was 4.5% in August, down from 5.2% a year earlier but up from 4.1% in July. The MSA encompasses Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer County in Pennsylvania.
