Meijer Confirms May Opening for Boardman Store
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Meijer confirmed Thursday morning that an opening sometime in May is planned for its new Boardman store.
An announcement regarding the Boardman store would be made “when we have an official date,” Joe Hirschmugl, external communications manager for the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retail chain, said in an email responding to a request for comment.
In late February, Dessie Szklany store director for the Boardman location, said Meijer planned to announce a grand opening date six weeks out from that date. Recent social media posts indicating a May opening reignited speculation about an opening.
“Once we have more info on the Boardman store, we will share with you,” Hirschmugl said.
Hiring already is under way for the Boardman store, one of three Meijer plans to open in Ohio this year.
It also is the first of three planned for the Mahoning Valley. In 2016, the chain bought land in Austintown on Mahoning Avenue for one proposed store and in 2018 indicated that it had an agreement with the Cafaro Co. for the former Super Kmart building at the Eastwood Mall Complex in Niles.
“All I am able to say at this point is that our company executives are in very productive discussions with their counterparts at Meijer,” Joe Bell, director of corporate communications for the Cafaro Co., said.
Hirschmugl did not respond to requests for further information about the Niles and Austintown stores.
Austintown officials approved a zone change and conditional use permit in 2016 for the site but have not received any updated information on when construction would get underway, according to township zoning inspector Darren Crivelli. “They originally told us a spring 2021 opening,” he said.
