Mercy Health Buys Old VA Clinic, Adjacent Sites for $850,000
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Mercy Health-Youngstown has purchased a group of properties along Belmont Avenue, including the former VA clinic, for $850,000.
In a deal closed Aug. 20, Mercy bought 2013 Belmont Avenue from Tri-State Laboratories. According to the Mahoning County Auditor’s office, Tri-State consolidated four parcels it owned a week earlier.
The auditor’s listing for 2013 Belmont shows a property sketch of the building at 2111 Belmont and the listed address for the property is 2013-2111 Belmont, a grouping that includes the VA clinic at 2031 Belmont – the former Youngstown Veterans Outpatient Clinic.
Jim Grantz of commercial realty firm Edward J. Lewis Inc., which handled the sale, confirmed that the parcels were combined and sold as one property.
In a statement, a Mercy Health spokesman said that while a final purpose for the former VA clinic has not been determined, among its potential uses are housing the health-care system’s residency program and “enhancing current access to health services.”
“Mercy Health is fostering a healthy community through addressing the built environment by developing or repurposing vacant properties. The purchase of these Belmont Avenue properties will allow our health system to redevelop an otherwise vacant property within the city of Youngstown for further expansion of services including a renewed space for Mercy Health’s residency programs,” the statement continued.
The building that once housed the Youngstown Veterans Outpatient Clinic was built in 1950 and remodeled in 2002, according to the auditor’s website. Tri-State had owned the property since 2005.
At 2013 Belmont, a two-story house was recently demolished, while 2111 Belmont houses several offices, including Primary Health Care Associates.
Combined, the properties have 70,000 square feet of space. Both are zoned for medical offices.
In July 2019, the Department of Veterans Affairs approved the construction of a new clinic, signaling the end of the previous site that had been in use as a VA clinic since the early 1990s. The clinic started operations at the new site – the Carl Nunziato VA Clinic – in February of this year.
