Mercy Health Hosts ‘Movember’ Shave Off Event

NILES, Ohio– Bearded and mustached men gathered at the Eastwood Mall on Tuesday for Mercy Health Youngstown’s annual Man Up Mahoning Valley Shave Off event. The event marks the end of month-long campaign where men grow out their facial hair during the month of November to raise awareness for prostate cancer.

“It’s been a big conversation starter,” said Laura Boomhower, liaison for Man Up Mahoning Valley. “There a lot of people calling us that haven’t before.”

During the event, Mercy Health also offered free PSA Blood tests. Steve Burbrink, Man Up Mahoning Valley support group facilitator and prostate cancer survivor, says often times there are no symptoms of prostate cancer.

“You should start at the age of 40,” he said. “We encourage people to start at the age of 35 if the have history in their family.”
