Miller Promoted to News Director at 21 WFMJ

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – WFMJ has promoted Sheila Miller to the position of news director, leading the station’s newsroom and its linear and digital news properties.

Miller, born and raised on the west side of Youngstown, knows the Valley well. She will soon celebrate 35 years with WFMJ, having previously served as a producer and assignment desk editor, executive producer and assistant news director.

“Sheila has been instrumental in producing key news events, including locally-held gubernatorial and Ohio Senate debates with national press in attendance. She is also committed to expanding our local initiatives, including our investigative Watchdog Reports and 101 West brands, which include long-form journalism platforms,” says 21 WFMJ General Manager Jack Grdic.

Miller is a graduate of Walsh College and earned a master’s degree in broadcast journalism from Ohio University. She has received nominations for regional Emmys and multiple Associated Press Awards,
including the AP’s Producer of the Year award in 2020.

“I am extremely honored to be named news director,” Miller says. “I know I have big shoes to fill. But I take confidence in the fact that I worked with Mona Alexander for more than 20 years and learned a lot from her professionalism. We have an amazing foundation in the newsroom, and I will continue to build on that. We will continue to provide the top-notch journalism that has made us No. 1 for years. This community has always been my home, and I take great pride in providing a vital service to it.”

Miller is the mother of two adult sons. She and her husband, Ray, reside in Austintown.
