Mineral Ridge Native Earns Military Excellence Award

GREAT LAKES, Ill. – Seaman Recruit Amber Givens Morrow, from Mineral Ridge, Ohio, recently graduated as the top sailor from Recruit Training Command, Division 923, earning the Military Excellence Award.

The award is presented to the recruit that best exemplifies the qualities of enthusiasm, devotion to duty, military bearing and teamwork. It places her at the pinnacle of today’s newest sailors.

Givens Morrow, 19, was inspired to join the Navy by her grandfather, Kenneth James Morrow.

“I wanted to follow my grandpa’s footsteps by serving our country,” she says. “I wanted to achieve bigger and better things in my life, and challenge myself to grow. This is an opportunity to travel, see the world and experience other cultures.”

Givens Morrow is a 2022 graduate of Lakeview High School in Cortland. She is now attending Gunner’s Mate “A” School in Great Lakes.

Gunner’s mates are responsible for the operation and maintenance of guided missile launching systems, underwater explosive weapons such as torpedoes, rockets and missiles, and the systems used to launch them, gun mounts and other ordnance equipment as well as small arms magazines. They work with electrical and electronic circuitry; mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
