Motter’s Music Acquired by Maryland Company

CANFIELD, Ohioi — Motter’s Music, a music retailer and provider of lessons, has been acquired by Music & Arts, Frederick, Md.

Terms were not disclosed.

Music & Arts is the nation’s largest retail chain that leases and sells band and musical instruments. Motter’s Music Inc., 4242 Boardman-Canfield Road, was founded in 1932, according to its webpage. The company is based in Lyndhurst.

“For many years, Motter’s Music has been the local music store in the area for performing musicians of all styles and levels. We’re excited to continue to provide the best in instruments, lessons, rentals and repair services to Canfield and surrounding communities,” said the president of Music & Arts, Steve Zapf, in announcing the acquisition.

The first Music & Arts, run by founder Benjamin O’Brien, opened in 1952 inside a small house in Bethesda, Md. Today the company has more than 500 retail and affiliate locations, 120 educational representatives, and teaches over 1.5 million lessons per year, making it one of the nation’s largest school music retailer and lesson provider.

“In each new location we open, Music & Arts becomes a strong member of the community it serves. The combined experience of Motter’s Music and Music & Arts, plus our passion for service will certainly benefit the families of the Canfield community for years to come,” said Jeremy Mueller, the chain’s national sales director.
