MS Consultants Plays Role in Downtown Comeback
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – With last week’s opening of the DoubleTree by Hilton downtown, MS Consultants is reflecting on the leading role the engineering, architecture and planning firm has played in the city’s revitalization.
MS was the lead architect for the renovation of the landmark Stambaugh Building and its transformation into the 125-room DoubleTree hotel. The firm was also the lead architect for the Covelli Centre, which is credited with launching the revitalization of downtown. And on the front lines this rebirth, the firm says, was K. Anthony Hayek, vice president of architecture at the Youngstown office of MS.
“As a Youngstown native and lifetime resident of Youngstown, I have been involved in the revitalization of the Central Business District since the 1970s, when Federal Street was converted into an outdoor pedestrian mall,” Hayek says. “Through the many changes from vibrant retail area to boarded up storefronts and transforming back again to a vibrant ‘live, work, play’ district, Youngstown has kept forging ahead and trying different solutions to reinvigorate the downtown area.”
Hayek helped design the Covelli Centre, “which launched the rebirth,” he says, as well as the Stambaugh project, “another crown jewel of our revitalization.”
Annissa Neider was the lead architect for the DoubleTree project. “To witness this rebirth of Youngstown, including the transformation of the Stambaugh building, is really phenomenal,” she says.
“We all worked together to make sure the space fit the Hilton brand while also maintaining the beautiful details of the original Stambaugh Building.” Neider adds. “Marble wainscoting, the original mahogany doors, and the old brass mail slots are just some elements that are a nod to what this building once was.”
Other Youngstown projects MS has been involved with in recent years include Youngstown State University’s Watson and Tressel Training Site, the Chill Can manufacturing complex under construction on the city’s East Site, area roads and bridges including Federal Street, and the riverfront amphitheater and park for which site preparation is underway.
Thomas F. Mosure launched the firm in 1963 that would become MS Consultants. He was a lifelong resident of Youngstown and a graduate of Youngstown State University. The company is now led by his son, Thomas E. Mosure.
