MVSD Eyes $30M Grant for Meander Dam Project
MINERAL RIDGE, Ohio — The Mahoning Valley Sanitary District is seeking a $30 million building resilient infrastructure and communities grant to rehabilitate the Meander Dam which holds 11 billion gallons of water and serves over 220,000 people in the Mahoning Valley.
“Given a probable maximum flood, there is the potential that the dam could either start to erode or have a potential breach. At that point the reservoir would start to drain through Meander Creek and then into the Mahoning River. Depending on the speed that that were to happen it could cause potential property damage and then also the potential for the loss of life,” says Mike McNinch, chief engineer for the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District.
