Navigators Excerpt: A Career Pathway to Civil Engineering

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Brian Hughes has been a member of the MS Consultants team for more than 35 years. Now the Northeast Ohio transportation project manager, Hughes talks about the career pathway he took in the civil engineering field.

“Early on in my high school years I figured out that I wanted to be a civil engineer and I stayed home and went to YSU and got my undergraduate in civil engineering and my masters in engineering as well,” Hughes says. “I was fortunate to hook up with MS Consultants shortly after graduation.”

For students thinking about a career in engineering, Hughes has a piece of wisdom to pass along.

“Don’t be scared to try new things. Don’t be afraid to step up and say ‘let me try that’ or ‘let me do that’ because you can learn from every experience, every day,” he says.
