New Canfield Location a ‘Good Place’ for Salem Regional

CANFIELD, Ohio – As of next week, patients at Salem Regional Medical Center who live in western Mahoning County won’t have to travel far for primary care and diagnostic services.

On Monday, Salem Regional will officially open its new primary care and advanced radiology center in Canfield, the health care system’s first facility in the county.

“We looked at our region to where some of our patients come from, so we try to bring our services out to our patients,” said Dr. Anita Hackstedde, president and CEO of Salem Regional.  “We do see growth in this area. We think this is a good place to position ourselves to be a health care leader here.”

The facility’s ARC Advanced Radiology Center is equipped with some of the most advanced imaging systems in the health care field, Hackstedde said. These imaging services include 64-Slice CT scans, 3D mammograms and digital X-rays, she added. Walk-in patients are welcome for X-rays and 3D mammograms. There are also plans to include ultrasound services.

“This is true outpatient and lower cost,” she said.

The hospital expects to hire five employees to staff its imaging center, she added. “Some staff from our Salem office will be coming up here as well,” Hackstedde said.

Dr. Peter Apicella will serve as the radiology center’s medical director.

In addition to imaging, the new center also provides primary care services. Dr. Joseph Miladore, along with nurse practitioner Kyle Marshall, will serve their patients from the Canfield location.

“I couldn’t be more excited than to work, especially, in the town that I grew up in,” Miladore said. “I’m really excited to expand my practice from the Salem location to the Canfield location.”

Initially, Miladore said he will see patients in the Salem office approximately three days per week and two days at the Canfield site. “We’ll see how the schedule goes from there,” he said.

Future plans call for rotating hospital specialists to the Canfield office, Hackstedde said. “One of our orthopedists is coming out here. We’ll likely have a general surgeon coming out here so we can bring services to the patients,” she said. “That will come later on.”

Construction for Salem Regional’s Canfield center cost more than $3 million, not including the equipment, Hackstedde said. The health care facility is the first commercial operation at Millennial Moments, a mixed-use planned development at the corner of Palmyra Road and U.S. Route 224.

The site also proved appealing because of the potential growth for residential housing at the location, Hackstedde added.

“We worked with the developer, and we thought this would be a good location to expand and provide services,” Hackstedde said. “As he starts to grow the residential area, they could walk in, see our providers, walk in and get their mammogram and X-ray.”

The new Canfield center is opening as Salem Regional nears completion on its 76,000-square-foot surgery and outpatient pavilion in Columbiana. That project includes an advanced radiology center, a surgery center, an infusion center and multispecialty physician offices.
