New Vehicle Sales Roar Back Across Mahoning Valley

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Sales of new cars and trucks to Mahoning Valley residents rebounded significantly in May compared with the same period a year ago, according to data from the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association.

Residents of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties purchased a total of 2,455 new vehicles last month, compared with 1,809 in May 2022, a leap of 35%, the dealers’ report says.

The May numbers also reflect an 18.5% increase in new vehicle sales compared with the previous month.

Through the first five months of 2023, consumers in the Mahoning Valley have purchased 10,470 new vehicles off dealers’ lots, compared with 9,225 during the same period a year ago – a 13.4% increase, data show.

Used vehicle sales were down in May compared with year-ago numbers, according to the report. Last month, dealers sold 2,012 used cars and trucks, compared with 2,163 in May of 2022, a decline of 7%.

Combined sales of new and used vehicles hit 4,545 units during May, compared with 4,025 in May of 2022, a nearly 13% increase, the report shows.

Boardman Subaru sold the most new vehicles in May with 137, according to the report. #1 Cochran Buick GMC (formerly Sweeney Buick GMC), reported the second highest volume sales of new vehicles with 131, while its sister dealership, #1 Cochran Chevrolet (formerly Sweeney Chevrolet) sold 128 new vehicles.

Ken Ganley Kia of Boardman sold the fourth highest number of new vehicles in May with 113, while Fred Martin Ford registered 110 sales of new cars and trucks, the dealers’ report says.
