Ascent Resources Strengthens Position in Utica

ODNR OKs Two New Wells in Columbiana

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources last week approved permits for two horizontal wells in Columbiana County, records show.

Hilcorp Energy Co., based in Houston, secured two permits for horizontal wells in Elk Run Township on the Wertz and Johnston well pads, according to ODNR. They are the first wells permitted in Columbiana County and the northern tier of Ohio’s Utica shale this year.

ODNR issued a total of seven permits during the week ended May 5, the agency reported.

Aside from the two Columbiana County wells, ODNR approved five horizontal wells for Oklahoma City-based Ascent Resources Utica LLC – three of the wells are in Guernsey County and two others are slated for Jefferson County, ODNR said.

The rig count across Ohio’s Utica shale stood at 22 for the week, ODNR reported.

As of May 5, ODNR has issued 2,820 permits for horizontal wells. Of that number, 2,338 wells are drilled and 1,890 wells are in production.
