ODNR Issues 3 Well Permits in Utica Shale

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Three new horizontal well permits were issued in eastern Ohio’s Utica shale for the week ended Aug. 13, according to the latest update from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Ascent Resources Utica LLC received all three and plans to drill its wells in Londonderry Township in Guernsey County.

As of Aug. 13, ODNR has issued 2,213 permits in the Utica and energy companies have drilled 1,771 horizontal wells. There are 1,373 producing wells across the oil and gas play in Ohio.

The rig count in Ohio’s Utica stood at 14.

No new permits were issued for Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties in the northern tier of the play, where oil and gas production is weaker compared to more lucrative geological strata in the southeastern portion of the Utica.

And no new permits were issued for Lawrence and Mercer counties in western Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
