ODNR Issues 4 Utica Drilling Permits

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Four permits for horizontal drilling in the Utica-Point Pleasant shale play were awarded by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources last week.

All four permits were granted to Eclipse Resources LLP for wells in Monroe County.

No permits were granted for wells to be drilled in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties. Nor were any issued in Lawrence or Mercer counties in Pennsylvania, according to that state’s Department of Environmental Protection.

The only activity reported by ODNR in Columbiana County was the plugging of four wells, two each in Fairfield and Elk Run townships, while a well in Lordstown in Trumbull County is also to be plugged.

For the week ending March 7, ODNR reported 12 active drilling rigs in the state. There have been 3,204 drilling permits issued to date, with 2,726 wells drilled and 2,451 wells producing.
