ODNR issues four new permits for horizontal wells

ODNR Reports 24 Rigs in Utica Shale

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Four new permits for horizontal wells were issued to energy companies exploring eastern Ohio’s Utica shale during the week ended Feb. 10, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Ascent Resources Utica LLC secured three permits for wells in Jefferson County, while Gulfport Appalachia LLC was awarded a single permit for a new well in Belmont County, according to the latest ODNR data.

There were 24 horizontal wells operating in the Utica as of Feb. 10, ODNR said, one more than the previous week.

To date, ODNR has issued 2,572 permits for horizontal wells, 2,267 of which have been drilled and 1,845 of which are in production.

ODNR reported no new permits for horizontal wells in the northern section of the Utica, which includes Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio. Nor were there permits issued in neighboring Mercer and Lawrence counties in western Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
