Ohio Utica Gas Production Up 160% in Second Quarter

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Newly released Utica shale production numbers show Ohio wells produced nearly 5-6 million barrels of oil and 221 billion cubic feet of natural gas during the second quarter

According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resoruces, these numbers break all previous production reporting records for the last 100 years.

Production continues to rise as oil increased by more than 3.1 million barrels and gas by more than 133 billion cubic feet compared to the second quarter of 2014, the agency said.

These figures represent a 126% increase in oil production compared to the first half of last year while natural gas production rose 160%. For further comparison, only 11 million barrels of oil and 450 billion cubic feet of gas were produced in all of 2014.

The new report, posted Thursday at the ODNR website, lists 1,020 wells, 978 of which reported production, an increase of 94% from the 504 wells reporting production halfway through 2014.

Forty-two wells reported no production as they are waiting on pipeline infrastructure. Of the 978 wells reporting production results:

Ohio law does not require the separate reporting of natural gas liquids. Gas reporting totals listed on the report include NGLs.
