Ohio Utica Rig Count Bumps Up to 24

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The number of oil and gas rigs operating in the eastern Ohio Utica shale rose to 24 from 23 during the week ended April 7, according to the latest data from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Just a single permit for a new horizontal well was issued in the Utica for the week, ODNR reported. Denver-based Antero Resources Corp. secured one permit for a well in Monroe County in the Utica’s southern tier.

No new permits were issued in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties during the week, ODNR reported.

As of April 7, ODNR has issued 2,800 permits for horizontal wells in the Utica and 2,315 wells are drilled. There are 1,882 horizontal wells in production across Ohio’s Utica.

No permit activity was reported in Lawrence and Mercer counties in western Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
