Penguin City Announces Limited Edition YSU Can for New Season

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Penguin City Brewing Co. announced Wednesday the newest design for its Penguin City Light Beer can.

The limited-edition label commemorates Pete the Penguin, the mascot of Youngstown State University. Penguin City is a sponsor of YSU Athletics.

“We are so happy to continue our partnership with YSU athletics,” Aspasia Lyras-Bernacki, co-owner of Penguin City, said in a press release. “One of the first things we did when we started this company was walk right into YSU Athletics Department and get involved in their fine organization It means a lot to us to be able to honor YSU with these limited-edition cans, and it’s fun to change the can every year and get people excited about what’s next for the season.”

The Penguin City “Pete” can will be available at retail locations in the Mahoning Valley and western Pa. starting this week. It will also be offered at all home football games at Stambaugh Stadium, as well as home basketball games at Beeghly Center.

“The Pete can was originally going to come out last year, but we decided to hold off for 2021,” said Michael Pontikos, brand manager for Penguin City Beer. “This is now the second in a series with our collaboration with Youngstown native Jesse Reed, a partner at Order Design in new York City. It’s always too great to see how, no matter the distance, people from the Valley will find a way to work together on something that’s bigger than them.”

YSU football kicks off its first home game at 7 p.m. on Sept. 2 against Incarnate Word.
