Penguin City, YCC Partner on Zombie Crawl Brew

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Penguin City Brewing Co and Youngstown Clothing Co. have collaborated on a special beer label design and seasonal beer for Downtown Youngstown’s Zombie Crawl Oct. 26. The beer is called “John Young Apple Ale.” The companies are incorporating White House Fruit Farm’s apple cider as an ingredient.

“We are thrilled to be working with Youngstown Clothing Co. on this collaboration, and to jump in on Downtown Youngstown’s Zombie Crawl made perfect sense,” says Aspasia Lyras-Bernacki, co-owner of Penguin City Brewing Co. “It’s so Youngstown!”

Youngstown Clothing Co. created the special label (pictured at top) to suggest John Young coming out of the grave and reaching for an apple. The Youngstown skyline is in the background with zombies and the Spring Commons Bridge. Along with the label design, YCC will be releasing a limited-edition t-shirt that will be available during the Zombie Crawl.

The collaboration beer will be available at all bars participating in the event. Special bottles will be on sale from noon to 8 p.m. Oct. 26 at the B&O Station. A representative from Jameson will also be there during the day, says Lyras-Bernacki. “We are planning different drink specials involving the liquor,” she adds.

To date, 13 bars have confirmed they are participating in the crawl. They include B&O Station / Boxcar Lounge, Youngstown Maennerchor, Draught House, Imbibe, Ryes Craft Beer & Whiskey, O’Donold’s Irish Pub, The Federal, V2 Wine Bar and Trattoria, Whistle & Keg, Avalon Downtown, Suzie’s Dogs & Drafts, Kitchen Post and Royal Oaks.

Doug Beedy, brewmaster at Penguin City, says he’s excited to get to work on this seasonal brew and create a beer other than your typical pumpkin for fall.

“We used a unique yeast from a small farm brewery in Belgium and fermented barley and wheat together with fresh pressed cider from White House Fruit Farm,” he explains. “The result is a luscious, highly quaffable, and slightly tart ale with flavors of apples, oranges, melon, and a faint spicy zing. ABV= 4.5%”

Penguin City Brewing Co. was founded in 2017 by Richard Bernacki and Lyras-Bernacki. Penguin City Beer, the flagship beer, is a crisp, golden ale brewed with high-quality malts and hops, blending the classic and modern with a nod to Eastern European pilsners and a wink to English ales.

The brewery is located inside the B&O Station Banquet Hall. Hours are weekdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
