Directed by Trevail Maurice, “Dreamgirls” has already bested the sales for recent hits “Hairspray” and “Mary Poppins.” The show will have attracted close to 3,000 patrons by the end of its run on Sunday.

“Dreamgirls” tells the fictitious story of a Supremes-like singing group’s rise to fame. It explores themes of ambition, hope and betrayal, all set in the glamorous and competitive world of the entertainment industry.

A Tony-Award winning success when it opened on Broadway in 1981, the show last appeared at The Youngstown Playhouse in 1989.

Since then, it was also made into an Oscar-winning motion picture in 2006 and was revived to acclaim in London in 2016.

The powerful Motown-flavored score by Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen includes the R&B classics “I Am Changing,” “One Night Only,” the title song, and the Grammy-award winning “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.”
