Rig Count Slips to 21 in Ohio Utica
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The number of rigs operating in eastern Ohio’s Utica shale slipped to 21 during the week ended Jan. 27, two fewer than the previous week, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
ODNR reported that the agency issued 10 new permits for horizontal wells throughout the Utica during the week.
Antero Resources Corp. received five permits for wells in Monroe County, and R.E. Gas Development LLC, a subsidiary of Rex Energy Corp., received three permits for wells in Carroll County.
Chesapeake Exploration LLC was awarded a single permit for a new well in Harrison County, while Ascent Resources LLC received a single permit for a well in Jefferson County.
As of Jan. 27, ODNR has issued 2,748 permits in the Utica. Of that number, 2,246 wells have been drilled and 1,801 wells are in production.
There were no permits issued in the northern tier of the Utica, which includes Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. Nor were there new permits issued in neighboring Lawrence and Mercer counties in western Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
