Rig Count Stalls in Ohio’s Utica Play
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Four horizontal well permits were issued to energy companies last week in eastern Ohio’s Utica shale, reports the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
ODNR released one permit to XTO Energy Inc., a subsidiary of ExxonMobil, for a well in Belmont County, and three others to Triad Hunter LLC for wells in Monroe County.
As of April 16, the number of rigs operating in the Utica stood at 11, unchanged from the previous week, ODNR data show.
No new permits were issued in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties. Nor were there any new permits issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for wells in neighboring Mercer and Lawrence counties in western Pennsylvania.
As of last week, 2,159 permits had been issued in Ohio’s Utica, according to ODNR. Of that number, 1,725 wells are drilled and 1,270 wells are in production.
