Rig Count Stands at 13 in Ohio’s Utica

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The number of oil and gas rigs operating in eastern Ohio’s Utica shale rose to 13 during the week ended July 9 from 11 the previous week, according to the latest update from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

ODNR issued five new permits for horizontal wells across the Utica to two companies, Rice Drilling LLC and Statoil Onshore Properties Inc.

Statoil was awarded three permits for new wells in Monroe County and Rice received two permits for horizontal wells in Belmont County, ODNR reported.

There were no new well permits issued for Mahoning, Columbiana or Trumbull counties, according to ODNR. There were also no new permits issued for neighboring Lawrence and Mercer counties in western Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

To date, there have been 2,192 permits issued in Ohio’s Utica, ODNR reports. Of that number, 1,756 wells are drilled and 1,334 are in production.
