Rig Count Stands at 22 in Ohio Utica Shale
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The number of rigs operating in Ohio’s Utica shale stood at 22 last week, while 14 new permits for horizontal wells were issued during the week ended May 6, reports the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
All permits were issued for Belmont and Monroe counties in the southeastern tier of the play, ODNR said.
Gulfport Energy Corp. secured the most permits with six, all of the wells slated for Belmont County. EM Energy Ohio LLC was awarded four permits, CNX Gas three, and Antero Resources one to drill wells in Monroe County.
No permits were issued in the northern tier of the Utica, which encompasses Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.
As of May 6, there were 2,499 permits for horizontal wells issued in the Utica, 1,982 wells drilled, and 1,551 wells in production, according to ODNR.
No new permits were issued for Mercer or Lawrence counties in western Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
