Utica Rig Count Unchanged from Last Week

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The number of rigs operating in eastern Ohio’s Utica shale for the week ended June 23 remained unchanged from the previous week, according to the latest update from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

ODNR reported that there were 19 oil and natural gas rigs operating across the Utica last week.

However, just two new permits for horizontal wells were issued during the week, according to ODNR. Both permits were awarded to Chesapeake Exploration LLC for wells in Harrison County.

As of June 23, ODNR has issued 2,839 permits for horizontal wells in eastern Ohio, where the Utica is most prominent. Of that number, 2,367 wells have been drilled and 1,905 are in production.

There were no new permits issued for Columbiana, Mahoning or Trumbull counties in the northern section of the Utica last week, according to ODNR.

And, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection reports there were no new permits awarded in neighboring Lawrence and Mercer counties in western Pennsylvania.
