Vehicle Sales, New and Used, Drop in May

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Dealerships in the Mahoning Valley delivered 2,413 new cars last month, a 7.6% drop from last year, data from the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association show.

Combined sales of new and used cars in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties fell 5.4% to 4,379 vehicles.

Four of the top-five new vehicles in the Valley are manufactured by Chevrolet, with the Silverado holding the top spot with 162 trucks sold. Following were the Equinox with 138, the Malibu with 113, the Ford Escape with 96 and the Lordstown-built Chevy Cruze with 91, 13 fewer than May 2015.

Among used cars, the Cruze held the top spot as 94 were sold in the three counties, an increase of 16 from May 2015.

Sweeney Chevrolet, Boardman, claimed the No. 1 spot for new-car sales with 134 vehicles delivered in May, four fewer than last year. Second was Greenwood Chevrolet, Austintown, with 122 cars, trucks and SUVs sold, a 31% drop from a year ago. Rounding out the top five were Stadium GM Superstore, Salem, with 111 cars sold; Sweeney Buick GMC, Boardman, 108; and Fred Martin Ford, Austintown, 105.

Taylor Kia, Boardman, led the area’s dealerships in used-car sales with 100 sold, an increase of 15 over last year.
