Silly Science Sunday to Offer ‘New and Exciting Activities’
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Silly Science Sunday, the annual event presented by Oh Wow! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology, will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, in a new location – Huntington Community Alley in Wean Park, downtown.
The free family event, sponsored by David and Caroline Jones, will feature STEAM activities from a variety of exhibitors. It was moved this year because of the changed traffic patterns at the downtown museum caused by the demolition of the Realty Tower.
The museum will be closed during Silly Science Sunday.
“We want people to experience Oh Wow! of course but felt that moving Silly Science Sunday to a venue more easily accessible to our exhibitors and guests would make for a better experience overall,” said Katie Seminara-DeToro, executive director. “Plus, the temporary location allows for new and exciting activities. We look forward to bringing Silly Science back to Central Square in 2025 and will provide admission passes to attendees for a future visit to the museum.”
This year’s event will feature many longtime partners, including Youngstown State University College of STEM, area robotics teams, The Butler Institute of American Art, Students Motivated by the Arts, the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County and more.
Attendees will have the opportunity to design and fly giant paper airplanes, play in bubbles, ride on robotic recliners, witness chemical reactions and other activities provided by the exhibitors.
“Silly Science Sunday is a day meant for all ages to visit downtown and get excited about STEAM education in the Mahoning Valley,” said Colleen Ruby, director of operations. “We encourage exploration and experimentation at the museum every day, and Silly Science is an expansion of our mission.”
Additional exhibitors include YWCA Mahoning Valley, First Robotics, MCCTC, Valley STEM Academy, Brite Energy Innovators, Home Depot – Austintown, Sharon Robotics, City Machine Technologies, Akron Children’s Hospital, America Makes, Roth ID Tag and many more.
In addition to exhibitors, food vendors will include Sweet Sips, One Hot Cookie, Armida’s Cucina and R&J Smokers.
