Six Well Permits Issued in Ohio’s Utica Shale

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Six new horizontal well permits were issued to energy companies drilling in eastern Ohio’s Utica shale during the week ended June 17, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Ascent Resources Utica LLC received three permits – two for wells in Belmont County and a single permit for a well in Jefferson County, according to ODNR.

Gulfport Energy Corp. was awarded two permits for wells in Belmont County, while Chesapeake Exploration LLC secured a single permit for a new well in Jefferson County.

There were 24 rigs operating in Ohio’s Utica shale during that week, ODNR reported.

As of June 17, there were 2,533 permits issued in Ohio’s Utica. Of that number 2,026 wells are drilled and 1,574 wells are in production.

No new permits were issued in the northern Utica, which includes Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Nor were permits issued in neighboring Lawrence and Mercer counties in western Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
