New Downtown Barbershop Gets City Grant to Support Move

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The city’s Board of Control this morning approved a $4,198 water/wastewater grant to assist The Starting Line Up’s move to downtown.

The barbershop and beauty/nail salon opened Tuesday in the ground floor of the Realty Tower on Central Square (READ STORY).

Owner Jerome Franklin plans to spend at least $22,987 on equipment and reconstruction work for the shop, which relocated from Hillman Way in Boardman, said Tom DeAngelo, city economic development specialist.

“It definitely adds to the landscape of downtown. It offers a different type of business service to our residents, employees and those traveling through downtown,” DeAngelo said.

“This is something that is well needed here and it’s the perfect time for Mr. Franklin to be locating in the downtown. He has a nice spot there [and] it’s a great location,” DeAngelo continued. “He’s going to have a lot of foot traffic going by so I think it’s going to work out really well for him.”

Franklin tells The Business Journal that his shop is seeing a “noticeable” increase in traffic since the move and he is seeing many new faces since its opening downtown.

“Everybody loves it. They say it’s much needed down here,” Franklin said.
