Stepping Up: Gorant Candy, Make Cookies, Watch TV

BOARDMAN, Ohio – In case there is any question, and over the weekend there were countless questions and calls to the four Gorant candy stores in the Mahoning Valley, while their doors are closed, the stores are still selling candy.

Says Joe Miller, owner of Gorant Chocolatier, “The factory is still operational to meet national grocery chain demand and the retail store is offering curbside pickup and free home delivery within a five-mile radius.”

On Saturday, Miller’s company announced that it had furloughed 24 workers at the chocolate factory, 8301 Market St., and needed to sell its inventory of 200,000 pieces of Easter candy to survive long-term.

Meanwhile, the independent operators of stores in Warren and Austintown that specialize in Gorant candy emphasized Saturday that while their doors are close, that they, too, are selling candy online and through curbside delivery.

Perry Macheras, owner of Gorant Candies of Warren, 8264 E. Market St., said over the weekend that it’s “business as usual for Ed and I,” Macheras said, referring to Ed Ridenbaugh, executive vice president. He directed customers to the store website, GorantCandiesOfWarren.com.

Lori Gavalier, president and owner of Gorant Chocolatier in Austintown, said her independently owned store is open for “curbside pick-up, limited free delivery and internet sales. …We need to sell our Easter candy as well.”
