Summer Manufacturing Camp to Conclude with Public Events

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The community is invited to attend two events Friday and Saturday as a more walkable, bikeable, green and safer street demonstration will conclude the Mahoning Valley Summer Manufacturing Camp.

Both events will take place on Elm Street between Park Avenue and Madison Avenue.

The Line Up on Elm St. event will run from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. It will include food from local businesses, including Dalia’s Caribbean Kitchen, Culturehouse Coffee Co. and A Fresh Wind Catering & Social Media Café. Music will be provided by DJ Chip Banks.

A Northside Farmers Market will take place Saturday. The community will be able to purchase fresh, locally grown produce from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and participate in Mercy Health’s Stepping Out Program, which will offer a free fitness class at 9 a.m. and a social stroll to Wick Park at 10 a.m.

The Mahoning Valley Summer Manufacturing Institute’s two-week summer camp, which is in its 11th year, has been engaging 40 students from Youngstown and Warren in site visits and activities centering on additive manufacturing technology, active transportation and urban design.

Students were challenged to create a safe street demonstration, which will be highlighted at the public events this weekend. The improvements developed by the students will include a creative crosswalk, bike lanes and more. Those attending are encouraged to visit the demonstration by bike, bus or on foot.

Throughout the camp, students visited local manufacturers and explored manufacturing and STEM-related careers, developed their leadership skills and worked as a team.
