The Take Out Brings Southern Staples to East Side

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Waymond Chambers has a natural knack for cooking, and last year he brought that talent to the East Side to fill a void in his hometown.

“There’s nothing like this here, and cooking is a passion of mine,” Chambers says.

Chambers and co-owner Antonio Owens opened The Take Out, a soul food takeout restaurant, last year at 1852 Oak St.

The duo says they opened the store to serve their community in a way that hasn’t been done before. Owens handles the business end and Chambers is the head chef and store manager.

Chambers and Owens grew up on the East Side and decided to set up shop on familiar ground. The restaurant specializes in Southern staples like ribs, fried chicken, fried fish, smoked beef brisket and pulled pork. It also serves Beyond Burgers, a popular plant-based meat substitute.

The items on the menu are rotated so that the owners can introduce new dishes. Chambers says the most popular dish by far is ox tails.

“We only sell them one day a week, and they sell out within hours,” Chambers says.

As head chef, he uses the talents passed down to him from his grandmother. “I wanted to go to culinary school but never got a chance to do it,” he says. “I just picked up stuff from my grandmother.”

The restaurant only offers takeout – no dine-in – and customers can order through both DoorDash and GrubHub, by calling 234 855 1293 and in-person. The Take Out is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.
