The Update | A Week of Jazz, Film and Art at YSU; Fun Fest at Quaker Steak

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown State University jazz ensemble, directed by Kent Engelhardt, will perform at 7:30 p.m. today in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center.

The concert will feature premieres by YSU faculty Engelhardt and Paul Louth. The event is free and open to the public.

Short films by Ilena Finocchi, Illya Mousavijad and Michael Schmidt will be screened at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, at the McDonough Museum of Art on the YSU campus.

The Dana percussion studio will perform a Music at Noon series show at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Butler Institute of American Art.

At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, jazz quintets led by Dave Morgan and Dave Kana will perform in Spotlight Theater in Bliss Hall on the YSU campus.

Frightfully Fun Fest at Quaker Steak

SHARON, Pa. – The second annual Frightfully Fun Fest on the Shenango will take place Friday, Oct. 27, from 4 to 9 p.m. at the original Quaker Steak & Lube, 101 Chestnut Ave.

New this year at the family-friendly Halloween event will be hayrides provided by Farkas Farms and an adult costume after-party.  

The event will also include a lighted outdoor pop-up artisan marketplace, an outdoor Yappy Hour with a pet costume contest judged by Strayhaven Animal Shelter of Greenville, a pumpkin decorating station for kids and a spider cider station. Warming stations will be set up throughout the event area.  

Quaker Steak & Lube will break ground in November on its new riverfront entertainment complex, which is being funded by an American Rescue Plan grant from the city. It will be completed by the end of the year.

Pints vs. Polio Presented by Rotary

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Rotary Club of Youngstown’s fifth annual Pints vs Polio event will take place Wednesday, Oct. 25, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Penguin City Brewing, downtown.

The brewery will donate $1 to Rotary’s Polio Plus fund for every pint of beer sold that day.

The Youngstown Rotary Foundation will match the amount raised, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will then match that total amount two for one.

Craft Beer Tasting Benefits Library

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – ’Tis the Season for a Brew Ha Ha, a craft beer tasting, will take place Nov. 4 at Main Library, 305 Wick Ave., from 6 to 9 p.m.

Presented by Friends of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, the event benefits children’s programs at the library. 

Participating breweries include Paladin Brewing, Birdfish Brewing, Noble Creature Cask House, DOPE Cider House and Winery, the 1547 Project, Biker BrewHouse, The Pump House, Modern Methods Brewing Co., Penguin City Brewing Co., BrewLounge Beer Co. and Aeonian Brewing. 

Food will be offered by Bohr Brothers Barbecue.

Fortnite Video Game League at JCC

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – A Fortnite video game league for ages 10 and up will begin Nov. 7 at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane.

Teams of three will compete in this six-week league, with the top two teams eligible for prizes. Competitions will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Dec. 12.

The cost is $30 for JCC members and $40 for nonmembers. Go to jccyoungstown.org/esports to register by Nov. 3.

Queen Nation Coming to Robins Theatre

WARREN, Ohio – Queen Nation will return to Warren on Saturday, Feb. 24, for an 8 p.m. concert at the Robins Theatre.

One of the most popular acts at the annual River Rock at the Amp concert series at the Warren Community Amphitheatre, Queen Nation has been nationally recognized as providing the most accurate re-creation of a Queen concert.

Tickets will range between $18 and $38 (plus applicable fees) and will go on sale on Friday, Oct. 27, at 10 a.m. at robinstheatre.com and the box office, 160 E. Market St.

Poetry Reading at Westside Bowl

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Lit Youngstown’s First Wednesday reader series will present Jeremy Proehl and Jean Reinhold on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. at Westside Bowl, 2617 Mahoning Ave.

Lit Youngstown will also present a virtual reading at 7 p.m. Nov. 2 on its YouTube channel with Joshua Gottlieb Miller and Rosanna Young Oh, who will be joined by Allison Pitinii Davis.

The First Wednesday reading in December will feature Christopher Barzak of Youngstown and Carrie George of Akron.

Presentation on Birds, Native Plants

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – The Audubon Society of the Mahoning Valley will present For the Birds: The Relationship Between Birds and Native Plants at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, at Austintown Senior Center, 112 Westchester Drive.

The presentation will be delivered by naturalists Gary Davenport and Sarah Lowry. Admission is free.
