The Update | Air Force Ensemble in Concert; Scott Pergande Art Show, Sale

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Heritage Winds, a woodwind ensemble of the U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band, will present a free concert at Ford Family Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15.

Heritage Winds is composed of professional Airmen-musicians whose commitment to excellence has earned worldwide acclaim and military distinction. Their modern and innovative approach to the classic woodwind ensemble delivers a musical story fueled by energy and grounded in patriotic spirit.

The program will feature classical chamber music, newly commissioned works and creative arrangements of new standards in popular music while honoring America’s veterans.

Heritage Winds, activated in 1941, has a rich history of inspiring public patriotism and enhancing esprit de corps among all the U.S. military service branches. The musicians are stationed at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Hampton, Va., and travel throughout much of the eastern seaboard, presenting more than 350 events annually.

Celebration of Art of Scott Pergande

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Honeycomb Arts and Wellness Collective will present “Looking Back and Reaching Forward, an Art Celebration,” honoring local artist Scott Pergande, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at Coy Cornelius and Judy Rogers studios, 1931 Belmont Ave.

The event will include a performance by Youngstown Dance Collective at 7:30 p.m. and Black Wolf & The Thief at 8 p.m.

Pergande is known for his masks, paintings, furniture pieces and outdoor garden sculptures. His art, and that of regional artists Joyce Bielik, Jim Traficant, Richard Murray, John Axe and Chris Yambar, will be on display and available for purchase.

Auditions for Youth Production of ‘Puffs’

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Auditions for The Youngstown Playhouse’s youth theater production of “Puffs, or 7 Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic” will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 4-5.

Children ages 10 to 17 are needed to play lead roles, and adults are needed to play teachers and various other roles. Actors should be prepared to read from the script. Rehearsal times are yet to be determined but will typically run Monday to Thursday.

“Puffs,” by Matt Cox, is a parody of the “Harry Potter” novels by J.K. Rowling.

Holborn Herb Growers Present Annual Tea

BOARDMAN, Ohio – The Holborn Herb Growers Guild’s annual tea party will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, at the Lariccia Family Community Center in Boardman Park, 375 Boardman-Poland Road.

The event will feature a sampling of herbal teas and savory and sweet delicacies. Guests can also tour the Summer Kitchen herb garden behind St. James Meeting House in the park. Guest speaker Robb Coonce, owner of Full Circle Florist, will discuss flower arranging.

As a keepsake of the event, souvenir teacups and saucers will be gifted to each visitor. Basket raffles will be offered, along with a Komara Jewelers door prize drawing.

The Holborn Herb Growers Guild began in 1982 with the aim of educating members and the public in the use and enjoyment of herbs. To this end, the guild has established public herb gardens at the Western Reserve Village at the Canfield Fairgrounds and the Summer Kitchen Gardens at Boardman Park.
